THE PROBLEM WITH TOYS AT SCHOOL

Dear Parents,

As we discussed back in September at our initial meeting, we really discourage toys coming to school.
              PLEASE KEEP TOYS AT HOME!

Several problems arise from the variety of home toys that come into the classroom. There is the obvious sharing difficulty, as well as toys being lost or broken, which always leads to tears and upset. However, there is also the distraction element that these toys bring into the learning environment that is the most disruptive problem for teachers.

Every day we are asking children to put toys back into their backpacks so they won't get lost or distract students. We remove them from little hands as a lesson is being taught because everyone wants a turn to look and touch the item. Several times, over the last week, toys from home were left behind in the classroom only to be remembered as the bus was departing, thus causing tears and upset at the end of the day.

The other problem is collectible cards being traded, lost, and even shared. If there are not enough cards for every child then we have children who didn't receive a card crying that they didn't get one.  If there are enough to go around then, inevitably, someone loses their card and wants another.  (Yikes!)

Please help us reduce these problems for the next couple of weeks and again in September for next year.  Thank you so much for your assistance in this regard.

EXCEPTION to the RULE: For those students who are now participating in afternoon recess - this rule does not apply to outdoor toys (such as balls, skipping ropes, and outdoor chalk) as those toys DO NOT come into the classroom.

June Updates

Over the past few weeks, the students have been reviewing the reading comprehension skills and strategies that we have been learning. The students are confident in making a plot prediction and are now working on explaining why they have made that prediction. (I think.....because....) We are also able to identify the characters, setting, and problem in the story and are now working on explaining the solution/ending to a story.

The green group read a story about a potato that needed many people to help harvest it. This lead to a science discussion and eventually to a science investigation: what happens to things under soil? We made several hypotheses regarding our composting investigation. The students put yogurt containers, juice boxes, fruit, crackers, and vegetables into a tub filled with soil. We will be watching the food over the next couple of weeks to see what happens.

RECESS TIME for afternoon classes!

Today was our first recess in the school yard with the big kids!

All AFTERNOON students will be going out for recess every day from now on to prepare the SENIOR Kindergarten children for this Grade One daily routine.

Recess is 15 minutes of fresh air and exercise from 1:25 to 1:40 pm.

Please be sure to send a hat and apply sunscreen to your child at home.

Please keep in mind that this should be a very physical break, and it is a key socialization component   of their day.  We also recommend that you offer some guidance in regards to your child's choices of toys for recess.  We suggest items that naturally promote gross motor skill development, like skipping ropes, different sizes of balls, or even sidewalk chalk.  We have found that a variety of problems and social conflicts frequently arise with items such as small electronic games, collector cards, and other miscellaneous collectible toys, so please discourage these. We want the children to really move around the yard, playing and interacting with their friends, running, jumping, stretching and working their muscles!
*Please ensure that toys are labelled with a name. Also, please warn your little one that there is always a risk of toys being lost, broken, and unfortunately, sometimes even stolen.
